2016 Walk to Defeat ALS @ Point State Park (downtown)
Aug 27 @ 8:30 am – 3:00 pm

About the event: The 2016 Pittsburgh Walk to Defeat ALS® is a community event that raises money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Check-in will begin at 8AM and the walk will start at 10AM. ***Volunteers will be given a t-shirt to wear during the walk***

Walk Volunteer Opportunities:

Shift 1: 7:00 am – 10:00 am

Shift 2: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Shift 3: 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Volunteer Positions:

Set Up: Hanging signs, lifting boxes, setting up stations (for early risers!).

People Movers/Guides:  This is one of the most critical jobs at the Walk!  Direct people to the registration booths, to the activities, to the starting line, and through the walk.

Entertainment:  This area includes face painting, artwork, games and crafts for children and families.  Help the children with the activities and direct everyone to the start line at 10 am.

Registration:  Volunteers at registration will be asking for/collecting donations, getting registration forms filled out properly and directing people into the Walk.

Food and Beverage:  Set up the donated food items and replenish these items as they run out.

Advocacy:  Have walkers sign letters to our government officials supporting ALS-specific lobbying efforts.

Water Station:  Distribute water to walkers, fill cups with water, and clean up cups after.

Team Pictures:  Help organize teams for their team pictures.

T-shirt Distribution: Distribute t-shirts to individuals that have raised at least $75.  One t-shirt can be given for every $75 raised by the team.

Social Media Photographers: Wear a special t-shirt saying “Ask me to take your photo.” Use walkers personal phones and cameras to take photos for them to post on social media.

Clean-up:  Tear down everything that was set up for the event, clean up the park, and load vehicles to go back to the Millvale office – moderately heavy lifting may be involved. Volunteers are also needed at the Millvale Offices to unpack.
